Little Blue Heron
An exciting week at Rainbow Haven Provincial Park for birders as a pair of Little Blue Herons (Egretta caerulea) not very common to Nova Scotia showed up for viewing with their distinctive mostly grayish-blue body and contrasting deep purplish head and neck.
It took a couple attempts to get some decent photos as there was a lot of atmospheric distortion on the first day from the moisture and heat over the marsh.
Marshes are naturally wet environments and when the sun hits the wet soil and vegetation, rapid evaporation can take place. Thus on this first day as the sun came out over the marsh there was a lot of added moisture in air causing a shimmering, blurry, and mushy appearance to a lot of photos (heat haze). Fortunately I return the next day for much improved conditions.
